Impact On Building Codes

Is this project related to City of Knoxville or Knox County building codes?
Staff Reply:
No, the project is a comprehensive update of the City of Knoxville zoning ordinance and it is not related to the building codes, The City of Knoxville Plans Review and Inspections department maintains a list of the international building codes that are in effect in City of Knoxville.

General Commercial Zone

Considering the "retail apocalypse" that is happening, it would be smart to loosen up restrictions on what can be done in the general commercial zones. The USA has more retail square footage per capita than any other country and that overbuilding is facing a strong market correction. The rise of Amazon and other online retailers is contributing to the contraction. In short, there are going to be a lot of empty buildings that were formerly retail stores. Allowing artisan studios and light manufacturing of all kinds might keep some of those buildings occupied. Loosening the restrictions would certainly provide more location opportunities for those employers, and make the commercial zones more diverse and interesting too.

Survey

I am just now finding out about recode Knoxville. I saw it on my kub bill. Why did they not send out letters to every postal address about this subject and the survey? I am watching the video of the stakeholder advisory committee and hearing them say they sent out e-mails and posted it on there web site. They said they wanted better response from people. How many peoples e-mails do you have and how do you expect to get them? How many people are going to know about your web site? What about people that don't have internet? So again I ask,Why did they not send out letters to every postal address about this subject and the survey? Or did they and I missed it? Thank You for your time.
